1. What has been your proudest career moment?
My proudest moment was launching Black Owned Studios + Marketplace and witnessing the overwhelming support from the community. Seeing incredibly talented stylists use the space and connect has been a dream come true.
2. Who has been/is your biggest mentor?
My community has been my biggest mentor. They have guided me through feedback and encouragement, helping to shape the business into what it is today.
3. What’s the most valuable piece of advice you have ever received?
“Don’t let fear drive your decisions.” This advice has helped me push through moments of doubt and uncertainty, reminding me that taking risks is part of the journey, but to always keep our mission at the forefront.
4. How did BlackOwned Studios + Marketplace come about?
It was born from a personal frustration whenI couldn't find a braider after moving back to the UK. I realised other Black women in Manchester were facing the same problem, so created our social platform ‘BlackOwned MCR’ to showcase Black hairstylists and beauticians across Manchester, with the long term goal of creating an innovative co-working space where these entrepreneurs would feel uplifted and empowered to continue their growth – ultimately creating BlackOwned Studios + Marketplace.
5. How do you make sure you stand out from the crowd e.g upskilling, research, social media?
I make it a priority to stay connected with my audience through authentic communication on social media, constantly upskilling, and also hosting diverse community events that speak to our community’s needs and interests.
6. If you could give one piece of advice to someone starting their own business, what would it be?
Be patient and persistent. Building something meaningful takes time, so stay true to your mission and let it guide you through the challenges.
7. What’s the best and hardest thing about your job?
The best part is definitely creating a space that empowers Black beauty entrepreneurs and customers, it’s the space I wish existed when I was growing up. The hardest part would be balancing all the responsibilities that come with running a business, especially as a solo founder.
8. How do you switch off after a difficult day?
I would have to pick having a good rant session with my partner followed by a chill evening of Netflix – does the job every time!
9. Desert island 3 course meal?
Starter: some kind of dippy cheese, like camembert or brie, Okro stew and kenkey for mains (aka the BEST Ghanaian meal that ever existed), and a huge slice of banoffee pie for dessert.
10. Which5 people (dead or alive) would you have at your dinner party?
Beyonce, Tracee Ellis Ross, Miriam Margolyes, Grace Jones, Ayo Edebiri – the perfect guests for an evening with lots of laughter and good conversation!
